The buzz around The Game Awards was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer packed with intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.
A Different Direction
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio clarified that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This choice of words implies that the team is likely building a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it kicked off the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, player agency, and deep class systems—traits that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths that are viable with a specific type of character with a personal story.
The series is also notoriously flexible, allowing players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be approached in a variety of manners, sometimes in lateral fashion.
- You might progress the story because you remembered something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.
The Journey Continues
It is these creative systems that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, players can get ready for another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
